Though invisible, sound is produced by the vibration of air particles. When their vibrations fill the air, they pass through our bodies and reach our hearts. Based on my inquiry into what "sound with gravity" would look like, I give shape to the force it generates through the medium of air. I listen with my entire body instead of solely processing it within my ears. This encounter with sound is also a connection between me and the external world. When sound reverberates through the air, it reminds us that we are alive. I hope this work acts as a catalyst for viewers to recall this implicit sensory experience.
Naomi Hamaguchi received her BA in Sculpture from Chelsea College of Art in London in 2002. She creates installations that explore the relationship between sound and space. Her work, utilizing “sound forms” that are coated in a dense black, changes appearance in response to the light and sound within a space and is arranged in an improvisatory manner like playing an instrument.
Notable exhibitions include Naomi Hamaguchi solo exhibition (Gallery Sou, Sapporo, 2020), Soundscape no. 7: In the case of APMOA (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya, 2014), and Soundscape no. 6: In the case of Bienio (Nagoya, 2012). She has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Imagination Super Highway (Kyoto Art Center, Kyoto, 2014) and KOBE Rokko Meets Art Festival 2011 (Kobe, 2011).
