KIKA cas is pleased to present Kyoto-based visual artist Naomi Hamaguchi and the latest work from her Soundscape installation series. The work is a “site-responsive” installation that reacts to the subtle vibrations of sound and light within a venue’s environment and whose composition is improvised on the spot. In this series whose layout changes every iteration, Hamaguchi views these individual sculptures as “shapes of sound” and repeatedly tests their placement, i.e., “tunes” them in a space before deciding their overall position. Coated with a non-reflective dense black pigment, these wooden sculptures intentionally distort our perception of visual perspective with identical shapes in various sizes. By weaving temporal elements such as the artist and the sound or light in a venue when the work is created or “performed,” her process also becomes an act of beating a rhythm through space. The core appeal of Soundscape lies in its spontaneity and unpredictability, ceaselessly unfolding in relation to its surroundings, beyond what the artist can foresee. Where space, sound, and chance encounters converge, a resonance unique to this site emerges. We hope you will take this opportunity to experience this series as it returns to Kyoto for the first time in over a decade.
